October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. In honor of it, here is a story written by Sandy Kloehn, Grassroot’s Nail Technician:

I’m a nail technician, she’s a new client. We sit across from one another. She sits back to relax and I finish preparing. We make small talk. ”Are we polishing?”, “What Color?” “What length and shape do you like your nails?”. As we sit for the next hour and a half those questions seem so unimportant compared to what she shares next. My relationship with Trina Reynolds will never be the same. It will grow to a friendship neither of us were expecting. Here is Trina’s Story:

December 17, 2008

“I will not die from this.” ”I am going to MD Anderson” (A cancer treatment center in TX).

These were my exact words upon hearing my former oncologist inform me that not only do I have breast cancer, but there also is a tumor on my liver. As he spoke of “comfort care” in front of my brother and sister, all I could think about was how this was surreal: I am only 46 years old. I am the mother of Hillary and Nick. I want to grow old and live happily ever after. I want to become a grandma. This cancer is not how I’m going to die. Especially now when I feel I’ve just begun to live. ”Do you hear me God?” That was the beginning of my search of another opinion about how I might fight and win the battle against breast cancer. I am one of the fortunate ones. I have strength to fight this and I am blessed with family and friends who love and support me way beyond what I could have anticipated. Because of them, I am determined to win this battle. As I listened to the doctor’s pessimistic words, I knew I had to seek another opinion.

I was able to take on the financial burden to find a different approach for treatment, but what about the women who cannot afford the cost of travel for a second opinion? There has to be some way to help women with cancer to receive a second or third opinion about treatment.

When you support the “Trina Fund” you are giving hope to women who want to make sure they are receiving the best possible treatment for their breast cancer. Your contribution will assist with out-of-pocket expenses of travel for a second opinion. You can help them win their fight against this disease. This is my vision for every woman who hears the same words I heard, “You have breast cancer.”

In an effort to help support the “Trina Fund”, Trina’s daughter, Hillary, and several other artists have composed a CD titled,
“Living Life Out of a Suitcase.” You can obtain a copy of this CD at Grassroots for a $10 donation and help support Trina’s vision.

At this time Trina and her sister flew to MD Anderson where she underwent surgery to remove her right breast. In addition to that, surgeons will also remove the tumor from her liver. We will keep you updated on her progress. We hold Trina in our thoughts and prayers..

OK, so by now our clients all know how much we here at GrassRoots love our Pureology Products. And if you are new to our salon it won’t be long after you are seated in our chair that we will be gushing about how fabulous Pureology is. From the 5 comprehensive Colour Care Systems which all have anti fade complex, zero sulfate, 100% vegan ingredients, and organic botanicals.( And I bet you didn’t know you can get up to 80 shampoos per bottle, that’s 2xs more than other shampoos! ) To the styling lines for support, texture and finish. There are so many amazing styling products to choose from we wanted to let in on a few our slylist here at GrassRoots just absolutely love!

Deann–Power Dressing, She loves how it adds shine, fullness, and texture to all hair types and lengths.

Kelly—-Texture Twist, She can’t say enough about the separation, hold, and pieceyness. Perfect for the more updated look.

Sara Lynn—Nano Glaze, Says it’s amazing for long hair blowouts. It’s humidity resistant formula dries hair faster leaving the hair shiny and silky smooth.

Deann Kelley's favorite styling product-Pureology Powerdressing

Molly—Nano Glaze, She also loves this product, but says if the hair needs a bit more smoothing she will mix nanoglaze and super straight serum making a nice little cocktail to tame flyaways.

Shelly H—Colour Max Spray, It’s a favorite of hers for protecting hair from UV rays and the outdoor elements while restoring softness and manageability.

Shelly D—-Root Lift, I love, Love ,Love this product for the amazing volume it gives when sprayed directly at the roots of the hair. It’s very light, clean and humidity resistant.

Tracey—Nano Wax, she says using it on dry hair gives it great definition and texture. It gives a matte finish to short hair. It has a medium hold, is pliable, and leaves no build-up.

These are just a few of our favorite things!

With warm weather finally upon us, our hair needs some extra attention. Long days at the beach, or simply playing outside can take a toll on our hair. Here are some hot tips for keeping your tresses healthy and happy, no matter how warm the weather is.

Deep Condition hair twice a week with a repair treatment conditioner. This will protect and repair damage form the sun. *Use Pureology Essential Repair Restorative Hair Masque.

If you are heading to the beach or pool, don’t rinse out your conditioner. Leave conditioner in for maximum protection and moisturizing benefits.

Apply a leave-in-conditioner every day to protect hair from sun damage. This will also help minimize breakage by aiding in detangling. *Use Essential Repair Colourmax, apply to wet hair.

Wet hair throughly before swimming. This will help avoid absorption of pool or ocean water.

Cut down on blow drying time. Let your hair dry naturally to preserve moisture. *Use Essential Repair Colourmax or Instant Repair for smoothness and to control fly away hair while air drying.

Use Pureology products which contain UVA/UVB sunscreens, part of our exclusive Anti-Fade complex.

Always remember hair tends to dry out in the summer, so keep your hair trimmed every 4-6 weeks. This will prevent split ends and keep your hair healthy and beautiful all summer long!

Have a great summer, enjoy every day! In health and happiness…

The Grassroots Team

Josephine is the baby sister to two older brothers, has a mom as a hair dresser and has no hair. This was the inspiration mom needed to start making these headbands. During the process of making them and during the first four months of Josephine’s life, two of her family members have survived cancer and three are currently battling cancer. We decided to donate $1 for every headband purchased for cancer research. We hope when your precious one wears a Josie’s she will bring a smile, a ray of hope, joy and life to those around her.

Thank you for your purchase!
